Savage River Reservoir Sampling
Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Savage River
The Western Region Fisheries staff have been very busy sampling lakes and rivers in Western Maryland - so we would like to share some updates on the fish populations on those areas. The Savage River Reservoir was completely drained in 2009 and re-filled by March 2010 to make necessary gate repairs within the dam, and since that time MD DNR has completed an aggressive re-stocking initiative. Our recent survey shows that the fish species community is now very similar to what it was prior to the reservoir draining. While we didn't "crunch the numbers" yet - it looks like the fishery is well on its way to full recovery. Yellow Perch are very abundant, with a lot of fish in the 7 to 10 inch range, plenty of Bluegills and Pumpkinseeds, and a surprising number of quality sized Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass. Rainbow Trout from put and take adult stockings are doing very well, as we observed many trout surfacing to eat insects during our survey.

Mixed Bag of Panfish on the Gunpowder
Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Gunpowder
I went out on the Gunpowder near Dundee Creek on Saturday, June 11. I fished a spinner and caught nothing but aquatic vegetation, so I switched to a Trout Magnet suspended under a float. I caught about a dozen panfish in the two hours I was there, all in the 6-8” range. Most were Pumpkinseeds, but I also ran into a few perch. The folks down the shore caught a few bullheads in addition to some small White Perch.

Fishing in the Rain
Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Middle Creek and Friend's Creek
I just returned from my trip to Middle Creek and Friend's Creek. I first stopped at Middle Creek and tried some of the deep holes at the put and take section but could only catch Fallfish and Bluegills. I was hoping there would be a big Rainbow that managed to avoid being caught. Never know what could be in there. Went up to upper Middle Creek and tried a deep hole that had two Golden Trout. Fished that hole for an hour but these two fish would not take anything-streamers, nymphs, san juan worms. Finally I fished another deep hole and caught a 12" Rainbow. Then on to Friend's Creek. I fished many runs and holes but did not see many fish. Finally I hooked a small Rainbow that got off the hook just as I was landing it. Then the rain started soaking me and my fishing vest-it got worse as time went on. Luckily it was not too cold. I caught another 10" Rainbow Trout later on. Some fish are left though it appears that most have been taken by now. For catch and release action I might try Owen's Creek or Big Hunting Creek. Photo is of Friend's Creek when the rain hit. Tight lines all.

This Kid Has Skills!
Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Lions Park Pond
Attached are pictures of my 10 year old son Ethan holding a 28" 10lb Rainbow Trout that he landed just after daylight at Lions Park Pond, in Frostburg MD on Saturday, June 1, 2013. The trout took a Hildebrandt Fly Spinner being pulled by 6 lb. test line, Ethan was glad he decided to pack the big landing net for this outing. Ethan decided to keep the fish after considering its chances of survival due to warming water temperatures in the pond. Ethan and I took the trout to the Bassin Box in LaVale, MD for verification of size and to register for a citation. Although I’ve taught Ethan quite a bit about fishing, he frequently out fishes me and I am always impressed by his ability to hook up on nice fish… call it luck or skill, the boy has got the knack.

Western MD Fishing Report
Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Deep Creek Lake, North Branch of the Potomac
I just spent a week fishing and camping in western MD. The smallmouth fishing on Deep Creek Lake was great. This trip is an annual rite of spring for me. I try to time it during the pre-spawn when bass are shallow and aggressively attack streamer flies, soft plastic jerk baits or tubes. A boat makes the fishing much more productive and if you’re camping at the State Park you can leave it at the docks right at the launch ramp. It doesn’t get any easier than that. This year was exceptional for the average size of fish. DCL doesn’t produce giants but it has a great population of 12” to 15” smallmouth and an occasional larger one. Mixed in will be lots of big Rockbass, Pickerel, Largemouth Bass and Yellow Perch. If the water gets in the upper 60s and the Bluegill and Pumpkinseed move shallow you’ll have a shot at some of the biggest ‘gills you’ll find anywhere. Of course if you want to change tactics you can head to deeper water for Walleye which are also abundant in the lake. But I have a hard time putting down the flyrod and leaving the shallow water action. You can often watch the fish in the clear water as they rocket out of nowhere, grab your fly and all too often spit it out before you make your first move.
I was also lucky enough to float the North Branch of the Potomac for trout one day with guide and former Western Region Fisheries Manager, Ken Pavol. The river was high which meant weighted nymphs and indicators but the wild rainbows and several nice browns were plenty of reward for our efforts. There are a number of great guides floating the North Branch now days and they can usually show you an experience which will have you convinced you’re in the Rockies rather than 3 hours from DC.
