The River of Words®
Poetry and Art Contest

Artwork and poetry from four hundred and fifteen school children were entered in the Maryland River of Words Poetry and Art Contest as a result of their entries in the International River of Words® Poetry and Art Contest. International River of Words® is a fun program where you can learn about watersheds and then you can put what you learned into poetry or artwork and can enter it in a free International Poetry and Art Contest.

Each year, the contest deadline is February 15. The contest theme is watersheds. Kids from all over the world, from kindergarten to 12th grade, enter their artwork and poems.

One winner in both art and poetry for two age groups (K-6 and 7-12) are chosen each year. All of the Maryland entries are then returned to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and then get another chance to compete in the Maryland state contest. Enter on your own, or as part of a group (classroom, Girl Scout troop, 4-H, etc.).

So, if you are on an outdoor adventure, capture the moment. Grab a piece of paper and draw what you see or write a poem that lets people know how you feel. Then enter those poems and artwork into a free contest.
