South Mountain State Park Celebrates 149th Anniversary Of Battle Of South Mountain

Boonsboro, Md. (August 29, 2011) — South Mountain State Park will hold three events to mark the 149th anniversary of the Battle of South Mountain on September 9,10,11 and 14 at South Mountain State Park.

The Live and Learn Experience will take place at 12 p.m. on September 9 at the Fort Necessity Pavilion. The program will help participants understand what it was like to be a Civil War Soldier. Participants will see what a soldier would have worn, eaten, and carried on a daily basis.

The Behind the Line of Battle program will be held at 10 a.m. on September 10 and 11. Park visitors can talk to living historians as they commemorate the Battle of South Mountain with an authentic living history encampment. Visitors will learn about the role of the Washington Monument during the Civil War with talks and demonstrations throughout the weekend.

The series will also feature a Walking Tour of Fox’s Gap at 9 a.m. on September 14. Participants will follow in the exact footsteps of soldiers as they fought the Battle of South Mountain at Fox’s Gap and Crampton’s Gap.
