DNR Partners With Dozens Of Restaurants To Celebrate Maryland Seafood

Dine Out Week Slated for October

Annapolis, Md. (June 13, 2011) — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is partnering with dozens of restaurants in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania to promote Maryland seafood for a week-long celebration, From the Bay, For the Bay Dine Out.

“From the Bay, For the Bay celebrates the many Marylanders who help bring local seafood to our tables,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “This celebration is a chance for everyone to enjoy a nice dinner out with their families, while also supporting our local economy and jobs, and raising awareness for Chesapeake Bay restoration.”

The promotion will run October 2–9, 2011, with more than 150 restaurants already committed to participate. DNR anticipates that more than 300 total restaurants will take part in the celebration.

“From the Bay, For the Bay is a great opportunity for our restaurant community to support local jobs and harvests, while simultaneously demonstrating just how great Maryland Seafood tastes,” said Gregory Casten, president of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington. “This is an excellent promotion with so many winners – most of all, the Chesapeake Bay and those smart enough to enjoy the double benefit of doing a good thing for generations to come and enjoying Maryland Seafood as presented by the many talented participating chefs.”

During the promotion, restaurants will feature unique presentations of fresh Maryland Seafood. Each restaurant has agreed to donate a dollar from every Maryland seafood dinner sold during the week to the Oyster Recovery Partnership, a non-profit organization working to rebuild the Chesapeake Bay’s native oyster population.

“This is an ideal way for the public to not only enjoy Maryland seafood, but to also give back to the Bay,” said Stephan Abel, Executive Director of the Oyster Recovery Partnership. “The restaurant donations generated from this program will help support the region’s growing Shell Recycling Alliance, which collects used oyster shells from participating restaurants that end up providing new homes for millions of baby oysters in the bay.”

Over the last decade, the Oyster Recovery Partnership has replanted hundreds of millions of oysters in the bay. Oysters are a critical species to the bay’s long term recovery. A healthy oyster reef not only filters the bay’s waters, but also provides habitat for other marine life such as blue crabs and striped bass. In preparation for the celebration, DNR has launched a webpage and a mobile web app featuring interactive maps to help seafood lovers locate and contact participating restaurants.

“October is prime time for Maryland seafood with many delicious fish and shellfish in season, including striped bass, blue crabs, oysters, flounder, dogfish, bluefish, lobsters and scallops,” said Tom O’Connell, DNR Fisheries Service director. “One of the key components of our From the Bay, For the Bay celebration is to encourage people from all over the Chesapeake Bay Watershed to try and enjoy the delicious seafood our State has to offer.”
