Pennsylvania Artist Wins 13TH Annual Maryland Black Bear Conservation Stamp Design Contest
Annapolis, Md. (April 09, 2009) - Patrick Sharbaugh’s painting entitled “Double Cinnamon” will be this year’s Maryland Black Bear Conservation Stamp.
“Patrick’s entry was judged to be the best out of 22 entries coming from as far away as California and Canada,” said Doug Wigfield, Stamp Design Contest Coordinator. “We received entries from eight states and Ontario; nine were from Maryland.”
The entry shows a sow black bear with two cinnamon cubs inhabiting pole timber with blooming mountain laurel in the foreground.
Mr. Sharbaugh has been an illustrator and designer for 30 years. He has illustrated for 12 books, designed sets for the Mr. Rogers Neighborhood television show, the Pennsylvania Game Commission and several PBS productions. He also worked at Pennsylvania State University as an illustrator/graphic designer.
His wildlife paintings have won numerous awards. Rick and his family live in the heart of bear country in Central Pennsylvania.

Proceeds from the sale of the Black Bear Stamps and related items are used to compensate Maryland farmers experiencing agricultural damage caused by black bears. These proceeds are added to the Black Bear Compensation Fund established by the Maryland General Assembly.
