New Waterfowl Blind at Wye Island NRMA for People with Disabilities

WYE ISLAND, MD (January 27, 2003) — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources State Forest and Park Service announced today that Wye Island Natural Resource Management Area (NRMA) will offer a new service to hunters with disabilities interested in hunting waterfowl, as well as individuals with disabilities interested in watching wildlife.

Recently, a wheelchair accessible waterfowl blind was donated to DNR’s Wye Island NRMA through a Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout project. The new blind meets specifications for the Americans with Disabilities Act and will expand services offered to persons with mobility impairments.

This project was built and donated to the DNR by Eagle Scout candidate Justin Loyka, of Boy Scout Troop #247 in Centreville, Md. Justin received sponsorship for the project through Ducks Unlimited, the Maryland Sportsmen’s Association, Quail Unlimited, and Friels Lumber Company.

“I want to thank Justin and the many sponsors who worked hard to make this project a reality,” Wye Island NRMA Ranger Dave Davis said.

For more information or to make a reservation to utilize the blind contact Wye Island NRMA at 410 827-7577 or wye-island-nrma@dnr.state.md.us. There is a service charge of $40 for use of the blind during the 2003-04 waterfowl season. For more information about hunting opportunities for persons with mobility impairments, see DNR’s Website at www.dnr.state.md.us/accessforall.
