African American History Month Event

February 16, 2006

On Wednesday, February 16, the DNR Office of Fair Practices hosted Dr. Mamie Parker, Assistant Director, Fisheries and Habitat Conservation of the US Fish and Wildlife Service for their annual African American History Month Celebration. As the keynote speaker Dr Parker began her inspirational speech with the national theme for Black History Month: Celebrating Community — A Tribute to Black Fraternal, Social, and Civic Institutions. Her message included personal, often humorous, narratives of her childhood and career with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. She attributes much of her success in the natural resources field to the lessons taught to her by her mother, an avid angler who passed the recreational activity on to her youngest child. Dr. Parker’s engaging smile, southern charm and wisdom captivated the audience of DNR employees and visitors from federal and state agencies and the community.

The Office of Fair Practices hosts several events annually to promote and celebrate cultures that are or have been under-represented in American history. Please join us as we celebrate Women’s History Month on March 23, 2006 at Noon in the C-1 Conference Room. Our keynote speaker is Kim Coble, Maryland Executive Director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
