Since its creation in 2008, MD iMAP has grown to host over 250 services of the most commonly used map data, such as roads, streams, place names, and detailed imagery. MD iMap brings together decades of work on spatial database development into a shared system that promotes collaboration, coordination and communication amongst Municipal, County, Regional, State and Federal government activities.

Maryland's Coastal Atlas

The Coastal Atlas is powerful online mapping and planning tool that allows you to explore and analyze data for coastal and ocean planning activities. Its accessible interface not only allows planners and managers to analyze the data, but also enables the sharing of data and information with the general public. Enabling Better Decision-Making

Having an easy-to-use and transparent platform to share spatial information early in the planning process allows users to identify potential conflicts so that they can then be avoided or addressed. Spatial data are essential for many planning activities, including siting of renewable energy projects, designing restoration projects, and helping communities identify areas vulnerable to sea level rise, flooding, and erosion. It also allows users to explore where popular recreational activities take place, view land and water trails, and learn more about our working waterfronts.

Data & Tools

Datasets are provided via map services by a number of partners, including Maryland iMap, the Maryland Energy Administration, Towson University, the University of Maryland, The Nature Conservancy, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Coastal Atlas offers layers on bathymetry, wind energy siting, fish and wildlife habitats, storm surge, sea level rise projections, shoreline erosion, wetlands, recreation, working waterfronts, public access, and living resources. Maryland’s Coastal Resiliency Assessment data is also available.

In addition to coastal datasets, online tools have been developed to support better decision-making and help concerned citizens address specific coastal issues. Users can use the measuring tool to measure shoreline fetch, the draw tool to draw a box around a specific area, or the identify tool to get more information about the data. Users can also work with us to generate targeting queries that help you narrow your focus area.

International Coastal Atlas Network

Maryland is one of over 60 states, countries and regions that have developed Atlases and are members of the International Coastal Atlas Network (ICAN). ICAN is a community of practice for organizations that have been working to implement data application and coastal web atlas development. The mission and strategic aim of ICAN is to share experiences and find common solutions, while ensuring maximum relevance and added value for the end users. MarineCadastre.gov, was developed through a partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). MarineCadastre.gov is an integrated marine information system that provides data, tools, and technical support for ocean and Great Lakes planning

Digital Coast is a partnership initiated by the NOAA Office for Coastal Management to meet the unique needs of the coastal management community. The website provides not only coastal data, but also the tools, training, and information coastal communities need to turn data into useful information.

The MARCO Portal connects agency, industry, and community leaders who are shaping the future of our ocean to the best available data on ocean science, maps, and each other through a state-of-the art data visualization, storytelling, and networking platform. The Portal features more than 200 ocean resource and human use data layers.

We created a series of ESRI Story Maps to highlight how the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Chesapeake and Coastal Service uses the best scientific and stakeholder data to inform decisions that are made about Maryland's coastal resources.
