NOTICE TO BOATERS

MAJOR RIVER SYSTEM:
Chester River
COUNTY OR COUNTIES IN AREA:
Queen Anne & Kent Counties

The Department of Natural Resources has received a request to seasonally establish a 6-knots speed zone from Red Nun 40 upstream to the Rt. 213 Bridge for all vessels except rowing shells and associated coach boats. The beginning of the requested 6 knots would be at a line approximately Lat. 39˚11.519'N., Long. 76˚04.327'W. running to a point Lat. 39˚11.459'N., Long. 76˚03.909'W. near Red Nun 40.

The requested speed zone would apply at all times during the boating season (April 15 to October 15) and is requested to exempt rowing boats and coach vessels accompanying them.

The petitioners are requesting this action based on their belief that large wakes from vessels are causing unsafe conditions at shoreline facilities and erosion, as well as having caused damage to docks at area marinas.

The Department will conduct a survey and study of this area during the 2008 boating season. Interested parties are encouraged to provide comments on the requested regulatory change. Written comments will be accepted until September 8, 2008.
