Choptank River Watershed
Heroes:
Heather Beaven and Jack King As regular participants in the Choptank Trib team meetings, Heather and Jack have been steady advisors to the team on agricultural issues. Calling on their day-to-day experiences in getting water quality Best Management Practices on the ground in the Choptank watershed, they have kept the team up to date on where additional efforts are needed and how existing programs could be improved. Heather and Jack developed a set of suggestions for making the cover crop cost share program more effective, and several of their key suggestions were adopted last year. Most notably, they helped get the program changed to include an incentive for earlier cover crop planting so as to provide more erosion protection and nitrate uptake per acre of cover crop. Heather and Jack actively support practices to reduce nutrient losses from cropland, and last year Talbot County had the highest number of acres enrolled in the cover crop program. |
