During
the summer of 2002, Allegany County officials, in cooperation with the
Allegany Soil Conservation District and the Georges Creek Watershed
Association, conducted a watershed tour for citizens, local elected
officials, US congressional staff, and state and federal agency
representatives. This
watershed tour provided an opportunity for citizens and other interested
parties to see the results of their efforts to restore Georges Creek. Projects highlighted included: the Neff Run Phase I project,
the Lonaconing Island Park project and the Mill Run project, which
employed an unique AMD treatment system developed by the Freshwater
Institute and the USGS Biological Resources Division.
The Georges Creek watershed tour highlights the community effort
that is necessary for watershed restoration.
As Allegany County and its citizens implement the Georges Creek
WRAS, their watershed vision will become a reality.
