Bluefish

Fast Fact:

Known as the "marine piranha" because of its aggressive feeding habits. Bluefish have been known to strike at anything.

Distribution Coastal: Nova Scotia to Brazil.
Chesapeake Bay: Mid to lower bay, rare north of Baltimore.
Description Body elongate with large mouth; black blotch at base of pectoral fin, greenish blue dorsally, silvery ventrally.
Max. size 40 inches.
Life span 12 years.
Food preference Fish.
Spawning location Florida up through mid-Atlantic coast.
Spawning period Spring from North Carolina to Florida, with a second mid-summer run in the bay and Mid Atlantic coast.
